If you’ve ever applied to a “CNC Machinist” posting and walked in expecting programming work but found yourself loading parts into a machine someone else programmed — or the reverse — the title is why.

Employers use “machinist,” “operator,” and “programmer” inconsistently, and job boards make it worse by letting shops title postings however they want.
A shop looking for someone to load stock and hit cycle-start might post it as “CNC Machinist” right next to a shop looking for someone to build a program from a blank print under the identical title.
If your resume doesn’t clarify which one you actually do, you’ll get screened against the wrong bar — either passed over because a programmer-level posting assumed you can’t program, or offered operator pay for programmer-level work because nothing signaled the difference.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups these roles together, showing a median wage of $58,750 for machinists broadly and $64,050 for tool and die makers as of May 2025 — but that range hides a wide spread between entry-level operator pay and experienced programmer pay within it.
Knowing where you actually sit in that spread starts with knowing which job you’re doing.
An operator loads material, starts the cycle, checks parts against a print or gauge, and swaps tooling as instructed — usually following a program and setup someone else already built.
This is real, necessary skilled work, and it’s the most common entry point into CNC careers, but it sits at the lower end of the pay band because the shop is buying execution, not decision-making.
If your daily work is running proven programs with setups already in place, you’re an CNC Operator, regardless of what your job title says — and that’s worth naming accurately on a resume, because overclaiming “programmer” experience you don’t have is one of the fastest ways to fail a skills evaluation.
A machinist typically does everything an operator does, plus fixturing, setting work and tool offsets, choosing feeds and speeds, and troubleshooting when a part comes out of tolerance.
This role requires reading a print well enough to catch a problem before it becomes scrap, and making adjustment decisions an operator would escalate to someone else.
It sits in the middle of the pay band, and it’s the role most job postings are actually describing when they say CNC Machinist without further detail.
A programmer builds the program itself — using CAM software like Mastercam or Fusion 360, or hand-coding G-code directly — starting from an engineering print with no prior setup to reference.
This is the top of the pay band within machining roles, because the shop is buying your ability to plan the entire job, not just execute or adjust one.
Programmer roles are also where specialty matters most: mill programming and lathe programming are different skill sets, and a shop hiring a 5-axis Mazak programmer is screening specifically for that, not general CNC experience.

Tool and die making is its own specialty, not a step above or below the machinist/programmer ladder — it involves building and repairing the tools, dies, and fixtures other machinists use, and it commands the highest median pay in the BLS data ($64,050) because it combines machining skill with design judgment.
Quality inspection is a parallel track entirely, weighted toward GD&T literacy and measurement over machining or programming skill.
Ask yourself three questions.
Do you build the program from a print, or run one someone else built?
Do you set offsets and troubleshoot tolerance issues, or execute a setup already in place?
Is your value to the shop your judgment, or your consistency?
Honest answers here tell you which title to use on your resume — and which pay band to expect and negotiate toward.
Once you know which role you actually perform, match your resume language and your job search to it specifically.
An operator applying only to postings titled “CNC Machinist” is missing roles titled “CNC Operator” that pay identically for the same work.
A programmer under-titling themselves as “machinist” risks getting screened at operator-level pay.
Search and apply by the actual work — process, machine, and programming responsibility — not just whatever word happens to be in the posting’s title.
